Hall of Fame - Deb Schmidt

Deb Schmidt

2015 AHOU Hall of Fame Honoree

 

Deb started her career in underwriting and underwriting management at the Hartford Life, Phoenix Mutual and Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance companies. She also has been a consultant on underwriting strategy and risk selection management to the US and international life insurance industry with her own company and with Milliman, Inc. Currently she is Head of Mortality Risk Management at Voya Financial®, responsible for review of underwriting standards and mortality assumptions, underwriting audits, and claims studies for the individual Life and Employee Benefits divisions. She also participates in mortality reinsurance and retention projects and audits.

She has served on the ALU Education Committee as a question writer and as Treasurer, was Program Chair and President of the Hartford-Springfield Underwriting Association. For the AHOU Deb has served on the Program Committee, as Vice President, Education, and as President for 2012-2013.

Deb has spoken on risk selection topics and training to producer groups, the Society of Actuaries, individual underwriting departments, the Southeastern Underwriting Association, the MUD Group, and AHOU. She has written on risk selection for On the Risk, Best’s Review, the ALU Exam 202 textbook, and LOMA/LIMRA publications, and is a member of the ACLI Risk Classification committee.

Deb has a BA in English and History and an MA in American Studies. She is a Fellow of the Academy of Life Underwriting.
