It has been recognized that prostate cancer is often quite indolent and that many men with untreated prostate cancer die with their disease rather than of it. Given the morbidity that often results from surgical and radiation treatment, active surveillance has now become the preferred course of action for most men with low risk prostate cancer instead of undergoing immediate treatment. We’ll take a look at some cases of prostate cancer managed with active surveillance and try to determine which are at risk of progression and premature death, and which ones “surveillance says” will remain dormant and inconsequential.
